Anduril2 repository versus anduril2 branch

Google code provides one repository called anduril2 and anduril repository contains a core branch called anduril2. I find this somewhat confusing. What would be the right policy between these approaches?

What are the main benefits of a branch versus a repository? Can you merge between repositories? Are there any ways to link repositories?

The second repository has now been deleted, we have decided to branch the original.

First commits in the new branch were done today.
