Hello DroidScript Developer,

I would like to suggest an improvement to DroidScript's project and user-data storage system for newer Android versions.

On older Android versions, DroidScript stored its projects and related files in a simple, user-accessible location:

/storage/emulated/0/DroidScript/

This was very useful because users could easily access the DroidScript folder using a normal file manager.

For example, users could:

- Open their DroidScript projects directly.
- Copy projects to another storage device.
- Transfer projects to a PC.
- Create a complete backup of their projects.
- Restore projects after reinstalling DroidScript.
- Move projects from one Android phone to another.

However, on newer Android versions, DroidScript stores its files in:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript

The problem is that Android has introduced stricter storage restrictions for the Android/data directory.

Because of these restrictions, normal file managers often cannot access:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/

As a result, users may not be able to easily access or copy their DroidScript projects and files.

This creates a major problem for backup and data portability.

For example, if a user has many important DroidScript projects, scripts, JavaScript files, images, databases, libraries, and other project assets, they should be able to copy and back up those files without requiring root access or complicated Android storage permissions.

I understand that Android's storage security model has changed and that storing everything directly in:

/storage/emulated/0/DroidScript/

may no longer be the best approach on modern Android versions.

Therefore, I would like to suggest using the user-accessible Android/media directory for DroidScript's user-created projects and other files that users need to access and back up.

For example:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript/

The same path without the /storage/emulated/0 prefix would be:

Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript/

DroidScript could create its own folder inside Android/media, similar to how WhatsApp uses its own package-specific folder under Android/media.

For example:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.whatsapp/

Similarly, DroidScript could use:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/

and keep its user-created DroidScript projects inside:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript/

A possible structure could be:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript/

    Projects/
    Scripts/
    Assets/
    Libraries/
    Backups/
    Data/

The exact internal folder structure can be decided by the DroidScript developers. The important point is that user-created DroidScript projects and important user files should be stored in a location that users can access and back up normally.

I am NOT suggesting that all of DroidScript's private application data should be moved out of Android's protected storage.

Private application data, cache, settings, databases, authentication information, and other sensitive internal files can remain in the application's private storage.

My request is specifically for USER-CREATED DATA such as:

- DroidScript projects
- JavaScript files
- HTML/CSS files
- Project assets
- Images
- Audio/video files used by projects
- User-created databases
- Project libraries
- Other files that users need to back up or transfer

These files should be treated as user-owned/project data rather than inaccessible application-private data.

A user should be able to connect the phone to a PC or USB storage and copy the DroidScript project folder without root access.

For example, the user should be able to copy:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript/

to another device and later restore it.

This would provide several important benefits:

1. Easy project backup

Users could simply copy the DroidScript folder to a PC, SSD, USB drive, or cloud storage.

2. Easy migration

Users could move their DroidScript projects from an old Android phone to a new Android phone.

3. Easy recovery

If DroidScript is uninstalled, the user could restore their projects from a backup.

4. Better file-management support

Users could manage their own project files using Android file managers without requiring root access.

5. Better protection against accidental data loss

If the phone needs to be reset or repaired, users can easily create a complete backup of their DroidScript projects beforehand.

6. Better compatibility with modern Android storage restrictions

Using Android/media would avoid depending on the increasingly restricted Android/data directory for user-created project files.

I would also suggest adding an automatic migration option.

For existing DroidScript installations, the application could detect projects currently stored at:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript

and provide an option such as:

"Move DroidScript Projects to Android/media"

The application could then move or copy the existing user projects to:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript/

This would make the transition easier for existing users.

The important requirement is that DroidScript itself should create and manage its own folder under Android/media.

The user should not have to manually create the folder or use special permissions.

Suggested final location:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript/

This would be much more user-friendly than:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript

because Android/data is heavily restricted on newer Android versions.

The old location:

/storage/emulated/0/DroidScript/

was simple and very convenient for users.

I understand that Android's security model has changed, so I am not asking to bring back the old location exactly as it was.

Instead, I am suggesting a modern Android-compatible user-accessible location under:

Android/media/

with a DroidScript-specific folder.

In short:

OLD AND USER-FRIENDLY:

/storage/emulated/0/DroidScript/

CURRENT BUT DIFFICULT TO ACCESS:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript

SUGGESTED:

/storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.smartphoneremote.androidscriptfree/files/DroidScript

Please consider implementing this for future DroidScript versions.

DroidScript is a development environment, so easy access, backup, portability, and migration of user-created projects are especially important.

Thank you for considering this request.

Hi,
There's an option in DS home screen to backup and restore.
You can also write your own apps to backup/restore
from app.GetInternalFolder()+"/Droidscript"
You can also export SPKs APKs AABs.
Maybe they could be standard samples/examples/demos.
Regards, ah
