I guess I am missing something, but the internal text editor (I don't know what you call it) of DS which is supposed to be more powerful than the "vanila" editor seems unusable. It does not respond to keys when I try to type. Then after several keystrokes, it suddenly wakes up, types a few keys, and sleeps again. My device is a Samsung Tab A9.
What can be responsible for the erratic behaviour?

HI,
It sounds like it's a performance thing
(the device is busy)
I think your tablet has 8 Gb of memory, which should be plenty.
Perhaps you have another app running that's taking resources

Are you using an external keyboard?
Have you tried changing the softkeyboard from Gboard to another like Swifkey or visa versa?

Yes, my device is a Samsung Tab A9 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
I don't use an external keyboard. I tried different keyboards - GBoard, SwiftKey, the same issue. No other app behaves that way.

What happens if you try typing into the ScratchPad... is that slow too?

I've just found out that the problem does not occur when I use the native Samsung keyboard - which I never use! My favourite keyboard is SwiftKey.

I'd still like to know if you have problems in the ScratchPad editor because that uses CodeMirror and we are using that as the main editor in V3

Which ScratchPad Editor? The ScratchPad in the Play Store for handwriting?

Just found that there is an online ScratchPad editor. I've never used it but will try it.

The scratchpad editor/tab is the second tab in DS on the left slide out panel.  It allows quick testing of javascript snippets.

Okay. Yes, the problem manifests in ScratchPad as well.

Hello Dave,
On the usability of the internal editor, I see that  with the latest DS version, I can now type, but I cannot save the changes. When I try to save, I get to the error:
TypeError: Failed to fetch

How do I resolve this?

HI,
Is there any more detail in the error message?
AFAIK DS saves your code when you run it or exit the editor.
Exactly when do you get the error?

My last post stated exactly the error message. First, I tap on the pen icon to enable me edit the file. I make a few changes and then tap on the "save" Icon. Then I get the error:

TypeError: Failed to fetch

The error does not mean anything to me. So I just exit without saving.
There is a real useability issue with that editor, and I think it is unfortunate. I have had that experience with the two tabs I have used with DS.

Do you mean you are on V3?

The "About" of my DS shows version 2.75.3, which came about after I installed file droidscript_2.75b1.apk

Ha! it just occurred to me that we may not be talking about the same text editor. I am not referring to the minimalist default editor in DS but to the other editor ("Scratchpad?) that has line numbers and a lot more features. That is the editor that needs you to activate the "Edit" mode and "Save".

HI,
Does the "minimalist default editor" save ok?
I only asked about the error messages
because they usually give a file name and line number.
In the past some odd errors have been fixed by deleting the .edit folder under the DS folder (you could back it up first just in case).

Oh yes! I have no problem with the default editor other than its lack of features - No line numbers, no search, etc. I would love a default editor that has at least the features of the scratchpad editor. My development device is an 8-inch tab and I wish I don't have to PC-connect to have a decent editing experience.

@AlanH: I think he may be talking about the internal file browser editor... not the scratchpad or the default code editor.

FYI:  V3 has a similar code editor to the file browser editor (based on CodeMirror)

Yes, it is the file browser editor I mean - the one based on CodeMirror. It would be great if only it worked.
