It was great to see many of you at yesterday's AUG meeting. Special thanks go to Brad Armstrong for looking at my Eclipse/Android setup on my laptop after the meeting and providing several suggestions on how to make things work.
I am happy to report that I've finally been able to get the Hello World exercise from the official Android Developers tutorial to work. Brad's suggestion of using an older version of Android proved to be the most helpful. Instead of installing the latest version of Android, I installed version 2.1. While it was still slow to load up initially, it wasn't quite as slow, and the program actually worked.
Now I'm ready to move on to bigger and more complex programs. Given that Android uses Java, it's time for me to learn that language. I've been meaning to learn Java, but I didn't get around to it because working on my Linux distro Swift Linux has taken up so much of my time. (I still have work to do, but at least the conversion to a Mint-based distro is no longer vaporware.) I'll have to make sure that I don't pick up any of the bad habits associated with Java developers, but at least I already have substantial experience with Python and object-oriented programming thanks to my Doppler Value Investing project (
