Hey all,

This is Kinda Off topic, And Kinda On Topic 8-)

I decided Yesterday to Turn My Old Laptop (Dell E1505 Inspiron) Into a Full Android/DEV Machine...

NOTE: The Only Internet I Have is OFF MY DROID!  So Wireless/USB Tether, Or DL Off One Computer and Transfer Over to Other......

So I installed Linux Mint 17, And ran Into a Problem That I'm Having a Hell of a time trying to fix,  I'm Pretty Much a NOOB when it comes to Linux (But can Usually Search Out an Answer), Anyway My problem,  Linux Mint 17 For whatever reason Didn't Install My Wireless Driver,  BCM43, So I Went to Broadcom, Downloaded the Driver but it's a MAKE Package, and I don't have all the Utilities I need to do that on a clean Install..

SO I downloaded EASYTETHER (Supposed to work with FoxFi on Droid), So I install yhe .DEB package It Installs, But NOW I CAN'T FIND IT!  (This Has Happened to me before.....) So Now I'm Stuck...can't GET-APT with no internet and that would be the way I know.....

I Need to Get the WiFi Driver In....Ayone Have any Ideas?

The Object Being is I want to Set up a Local GIT, and Get into a Little Bit of Deving, and this Is going to Also be My X86 Install Machine to Use/Test Installs....

Sorry for the Off topic, But I know theirs ALOT of Linux Guru's Here, And this is FOR X86....

Thanks

Mike

ALSO I forgot, I had the Option (Which I Tried First) to Format My HDD to GPT,  But went to Install Android X86 and Got an error,  Is it worth Formating GPT, and Hassle With the Droid Install???

Well, since you have an USB port on the device, you can set up a build environment on a separate computer, build the driver and copy it from the USB drive to the Dell E1505 Inspiron system.
Seems to be the most straightforward approach...

Regarding GPT, if your Dell E1505 Inspiron does not have UEFI, there is no need to use this partition layout.

Cheers,
C.

Ya that sounds good, and the reason I really Omitted the Idea was I don't know where to find the Driver Once It's Built,  I have Mint 17 On my Dell 1750 Inspiron, Same Wifi Card,  If I could find the Driver I'd just transfer it over...

Thanks

Usually, the kernel modules (if they are compiled as a module) live in /lib/mobules

Mike, if you can find the package in Synaptic Package Manager you can left click it and then click on Properties. A new window will pop up with an Installed Files tab. Click on that and it will show you where every file in the package went.

Ok, I got it,  I had to Direct Tether to the phone and Use Synaptics to remove\then install the driver... Hoping AT$T didn't catch it lol

New problem, Way Back when I first Installed 4.4RC2 on the 1750 I had to boot to either Windows Or Linux turn the Wifi Adapter on (FN-F2) and reboot to Android,  well apparently this computer turns the Wifi Card off on reboot and I have no way of turning on WiFi in 4.4RC2 or 5.0....Lol can't win.

Ok guess you can teach an old dog new tricks, LSMOD in Both X86 Installs show wl as the Wifi Driver (Same As Linux Mint17),  My Mint Driver is now B43, so I guess the question is, is there a b43 driver for X86's and how do I install them on Android-X86......

Thanks

in a past life I use to supply the android-x86 builds with b43 stuff enabled and working for the kernel....

I don't think you'll find any of the newer releases (4.4-r1/4.4-r2/5.0+) have that anymore.....

think they all depend on open source BRCMSMAC / BRCMFMAC for broardcom wifi stuff...trouble
is all available documentation I've looked at shows a "skewing" in that certain broadcom chips are NOT supported
by the newer stuff....go look at some of the documentation and you'll see....remember android-x86 also use to use
the wl driver which I guess has been "replaced/merged" by the xxx80211 stuff.....

this is a good thing except everyone has to get on the same page and that may be a while...and for how long do you
continue supporting drivers that are "outdated and unsupported" anymore????

you can still incorporate the b43/b43 legacy stuff in our defconfigs...I have my old Linksys WMP54G that uses the
broadcom BCM4306 v2 chip working fine by adding to my defconfigs...just as a sanity check....

FWIW

Ya I got alot of learning to do cause you lost me on "Defconfig"....

However I Did Find This :https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/android-x86/b43$20driver/android-x86/YFXu7hTl6II/7Q0dUzwS2G0J

So Figured  let me Check the GIT (LOL!!!!!!)  So then I searched for the Driver Under B43 and Broadcom and came up blank...

So Next Question Can I use the B43 In Linux for The X86??

And if so HOW??  Just drop it Where the Person in the post did?

Thanks

Mike

P.S. and ya I remember the WL thing, On My 1750 that uses the Broadcom 5100 AGN, Thinking that might work.....

Many, many years ago I used ndiswrapper to get a WiFi card with no Linux driver to work. I don't know if anybody uses it any more, but it looks like it has been recently updated:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/

Probably not a good idea, but thought I would mention it anyway.

I'm gonna try and Drop the AGN 5100 Drivers and see if they'll run the 43 Wifi.... Maybe Backwards Compatible....WHEN That don't work i'll check it out, thanks

b43.zip is unzipped in device/generic/common/firmware....

broadcom-b43-adds.txt are added to android-x86-defconfig / android-x86_64_defconfig

these are from my kernel 3.18.1 testing, but what I used on 3.18 for testing............
b43.zip
broadcom-b43-adds-for-defconfig.txt

think this is where I first learned about getting my broadcom card working....
but a work of caution to anyone who uses the stuff I supplied.....

as Chih-Wei said in the above reference:

"You probably need to remove the
broadcom hybrid driver wl.ko. "

if you go read the documentation I spoke of about "skewing" of supported drivers...under the new scheme
being used you may need to blacklist certain drivers when mixing and matching....on 3.10.58 / 3.10.52 I remember
having to blacklist either wl and/or brcmsma / ssb / etc. using the command line to insure my driver was being loaded..........
It's really spelled out in all the documentation I had looked at..........

so you get an idea what the "real" developers are up against to try and support everything...........!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok Ya Was playing In the System, Transferred The B43.ko and Firmware/Modules to The Android Install And Format Error When I tried to INSMOD, Already took out the wl driver, but got the drivers from linux so really didn't think it'd work, But I'll check your link and appreciate the info, I think it will help.....

Thanks

that link you pointed to initially(and I repointed to) is a little outdated....you'd be better off to build new using the
firmware files / patch to defconfig I provided from my kernel 3.18 testing.....IMO

Ya, Think I'm Gonna, Tried Dropping The Linux Drivers and INSMOD em in, Didn't work, But more trying to learn to mess with stuff then expecting it to work....

Gotta Wait on Data plan to Re-Up 5 Days, Then I'll give it a shot...

Am I Correct in Assuming that I just need to build the Kernel?
