The Guest is Android-x86 and configured as Linux OS in VMware (I also tried using FreeBSD as the OS). The host is Windows 7 (64 bit) and the webcam is Microsoft® LifeCam Studio.

I am currently using VMware workstation v12.  I select the WebCam in USB devices and it shows up in the statusbar
However, the Camera is not found in the Android-x86 guest.

I have tried Androidx86_6.0_R1 and Android-x86_7.1_RC1 (both 32-bit).

Note that if I boot my PC using Android-x86 on a USB-stick, the camera is recognized. Just not in VMware.
Has anyone been able to use a WebCam with VMware?

I have been tearing my hair out for months, so any help would be much appreciated.

p.s. I have the same issue when using VirtualBox - doesn't work there either.

Try to do research, if this Webcame is inbuild in Linux kernel and in which version.. after that you could check is used Androidx86 release has same or newer kernel (kernel version is in settings).. Enable it in lower kernel, would be probably more problematic.

@Nebudte,

Thank you for your response. However, I am a novice at this, and I am not sure how to check if the webcam is supported by the kernel?
In any case, I assume that it is supported because, as I mentioned in my post, the WebCam works fine when booting directly into Android-x86. The problem is when I try to use the WebCam with Android-X86 in VMwaree or Virtualbox.
