I have i Acer and IBM notebook that im planing to install a usb drive
in books casing (8 or 16gb) to perform a dual boot in case of
emergency.
Is there a way to install android to a flash drive like to an normal
hdd?
Ive tried doing this in virtualbox - installed linux on the USB drive
but it did not booted (operation system is missing or something like
that)
maybe the problem is that ext2 on flash drive is not supported when
booting? Any ideas?

Try to install Grub manually on your external drive.
You can do that with Grub Live CD or with Ubuntu Live CD.

After install Grub you'll need to insert Android OS on grub.cfg list.

I installed Android ICS 4.0.3 on a USB 4GB flash drive & changed it
from Live to Persistent following the instructions for doing so on
VirtualBox. Worked like a charm! Might try doing the same. Good luck!
