On Bootloader for android-x86

From my understanding, android-x86 uses fastboot as the bootloader for
the first stage and then passes control to grub for the rest of the
booting process.

I'm trying to port Android-x86 to a development board which uses a
customized version of kboot on a firmware for the first boot stage.
I've been able to run Ubuntu and Meego on it, but am not so sure about
how to deal with fastboot to boot Android. Is fastboot really
necessary? FYI, I don't have much access to the board internals and I
don't think I can flash anything other than kboot. Is there any way to
boot Android without using fastboot?

No, android-x86 doesn't use fastboot.

What you need is just a bootloader that can
load kernel and initrd and set customized cmdline.

You can use GRUB or whatever bootloaders that is capable of loading
Linux kernel and cmdline (not even needed if correctly set in kernel
image already).

If you can run Ubuntu I suppose you already have enough things for
booting Android-x86

By the way, your developing board is x86?

It's got to be x-86. There is no other reason for him to install Android.
