Dual booting Android x86 with Windows 8

I am currently trying to dual boot Android x86 Tegrav2 with Windows 8
Consumer preview.
I installed Windows 8 onto one partition, and then the Android x86 on
another partition.
GRUB comes up as soon as I boot, and it gives me the choices to boot
from:

Android RC 4.0
Android RC 4.0 Debug
Windows

However, when I try to boot from Windows 8, it says BOOTMGR is
missing.
Are Windows 8 and Android x86 incompatible?

I'm not 100% sure, but I know the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is not
the completed version of Windows 8, so chances are Microsoft needs to
add the files needed.

is perfectly compatible.. i use on my t101mt and fine works.. only thing that dont work is root permission in android

If u can't boot Win8, just try to upgrade to GRUB 2, because it works without problem, I installed Ubuntu, Android-x86 and Win8 CP and boot well!

We at the Wetab community also observe wrong repartition function of the Android X86 installation process when installing it in dual boot with Windows 7 or 8. Use gparted to create the partition.

only issue I faced was having to use gparted live to format the ext3

That's the reason I said in a previous post this should be the top ONE on the list to be done, otherwise Android-x86 builds could only be used by real geeks and by users with some linux/hack knowledge... ^^

This is of course just an opinion...

Yes it compatibile ;) U need to 1. install Ubuntu version then replace
and install Android on Linux (ubuntu) name partition :) Finnaly grub
shows Windows and Android ;) Well i have trinple boot ;d Windows 8 CP,
Ubuntu 11.10 and Android 4.0.3.

1. Instal Ubuntu beside Windows 8.
2. Run ur andorid iso form usb or cd.
3. Enter Install to HardDisk.
4. Select Linux (ubuntu) partition.
5. Format to ext3.
6. Create grub registry for windows.
7. Create Fake SD.
8. Reboot.
9. Enyoyn Duab Boot Windows 8 CP and Android !

Ok, thank you for the help.

I failed to install ubuntu about 3 times, so I'm not trying the ubuntu replacement method.

I guess i need to re-burn the windows 8 iso image, since when I install android-86 and choose to boot windows 8, it never boots with "bootmgr is missing". Do I need to change the settings on windows 8 to actually make it compatible with Grub?

Thank you all for your help!

I followed the tip about installing Linux first, and when that failed a few times, I formatted the partition for Android to ext3.

Then, I installed Android to the ext3 partition, and everything went fine.

I guess that formatting the partition to ext3 was the key.

and what's wrong with it?

What did you mean the "repartition function"
and what's wrong with it?

If you try to (re) create a partition, format one (which ever type of partition), this doesn't work or causes failure during the install process.

So "we" have to use an external tool to do the same job. Not really a problem with people with some geek mind/linux knowledge but problematic to the end-users...

 

How did you run it?

The "official" way described on the Android-x86 tutorial pages. ;-)

I seldom see such a problem.
However, it's possible under some situation,
the kernel partition table is locked
so the new created partition is not
visible to the installer.
But I cannot find the exact steps
to reproduce the problem.

If you can show the steps (including any preconditions)
to reproduce the issue, I'll take a look.

for me installed correct way on two different laptops 1 worked dual boot with windows. 1 bootmgr missing. after selecting windows in grub.
the problem is on a toshiba equium a100 running vista 1gb , centrino duo im going to dock my hdd and remove the files making it android only then my 2 year old has a new toy that he can play his educational games on.

RC2 is working well on lenovo FLEX 14 the only missing thing is synaptics touchpad gestures, it's working as a regular mouse.
