My modem and network connection sets up successfully with "dhcpcd eth1" or "netcfg eth1 dhcp". I can successfully ping an IP address like 8.8.8.8. However, setting a DNS with "setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8" or "setprop net.eth1.dns1 8.8.8.8" or "setprop dhcp.eth1.dns1 8.8.8.8" seems to have no effect and I still get Unknown host when trying to ping any hostname like google.com. This makes it impossible to use the Internet. What can I do?

Try the command to setup dhcp:

start dhcpcd_eth1:eth1

Make sure you have the dhcpcd_eth1 service in
the init.x86.rc.
(It should be created automatically if your eth1
was detected correctly at boot time.
If not, you need to create it manually)
