Hi all,

Could it be possible to create the 4 OnScreen Touch buttons : Home,
Back, Menu and Search as their exist on the Archos Tablets ?

The Bar containing theses buttons would be placed on the right of the
display in landscape mod and on the bottom of the display in portrait
mode.

That would more more intuitive and easier to work with, at least
better than the small status bar that most of the people don't even
know the function and would be really appreciated when using the
netbooks or laptops in tablet mode.

What do you think ?

Is it a hard work to create this system ?

I'm not myself a java developer (yet ?), but if some of you have this
experience....

That would be a great challenge, no ? :-)

I personally don't think we'd get it working before the Honeycomb source code becomes available which includes a standardised way of getting soft buttons on screen, so I'd suggest not spending time hacking the GB code and using whats in HC when it's released.

I'm using the app button savior which adds those virtual buttons. Also
there is a similar app called something like softkeys, both need root
access so make sure you installed android on an ext3-partition.

Euhmmm

But why wait after GB or HC, as these soft buttons already existed in
Archos Echair and now in Archos Froyo ? ^^ :-)

This certainly is the best thing they did with their Android version,
for the rest this is a real pain as most of their system is hardly
compatible with their hardware. :(

I don't understand what you mean ? Is this an applications we could
install or does the source code exists somewhere, so we could
implement it in the actual Android-x86 trunk ?

I have tried both Softkey and Button Savior. I could not get Softkey
to work, but button savior is aptly named, as it functions perfectly.
So yes, this accomplishes your request.

@ Rob and Bob Cambell (are you the same person ? :-) ,
@ Al,

Ok, I see now what you are talking about and I certainly will give
them a try.

It's partly or all part of an application...

I not talking only about myself, but the problem of these kind of
applications is that they are really confidential, and are not well
know and they could help most if not all users.

Anyway, I'll contact the author of the applications if we could freely
use his apk or the source code for this project.

But if he does, do you think this app could be part of the Android-x86
trunk ?

This could be nice also to the disabled persons, no ?

Sorry, I made a mistake I was talking about the froyo branch and not
the whole Android-x86 trunk... :D

Chih-Wei has the final say as to what goes into the repository.

Ok, if he did'nt read this post, I'll ask him.

I tried this app and it is very helpful specially when used in tablet
mode (without the physical keyboard) and in Laptop mode as well.

Many users who downloaded my custom build always asked me how to
access the Menu, how to get back without the ESC key, and so on...

So this may be the solution as the job has already been done... ^^

Thanks to Rob and Bob for directing me to this nice application. ;-)

I saw there is a shortcut to access to the Webcam, Search, and Phone
function from any place... Even if this last function (phone) is not
very usefull unless we have a phone or data device... ^^

This is a real nice feature.
If the author agree we can redistribute it,
I'm happy to add it.

Yeesss ! Super !

I got some hardware issues with others machines and caught a cold, so
I did not do much during the last past days.

I'll write to the author to ask him.

I feel a bit confused as this seems to be two versions of almost if
not the same application...

One is Softkeys which looks like to be available as source code (works
fine with the lastest version) and Button Savior which exists as both
free and pro (and so paid) applications.

The problem is that I don't know who is the original author : Steve
Slaven or Kiumiu.CA ???

I'll try to question both of them... ^^
