Android-x86 runs natively on the Linux kernel, but there is an quite fast ARM Emulator. http://www.buildroid.org/blog/?p=198
You don't need to apply the patch, but without the “ro.product.cpu.abi2=armeabi” line Google Play will not work, and many applications checking the architecture this way wil not work, too.

Hi all,

I just installed Android-x86 under virtualbox with the instructions here: http://www.kirsle.net/blog/kirsle/android-4-0-in-virtualbox (great instructions - it was very quick and easy).

I tried to install ingress via the play.google.com website and (I think?) I can see my Android-x86 "device" listed as "Unknown VM" and when I click on this a popup says "This item is not compatible with your device".  The install button is also grayed out.

Is this due to missing hardware (e.g. GPS) or is this more of a dead-end software issue (e.g. must run on ARM processor) ?

thanks for any info

Derek

p.s. I know very little about the Android-x86 project - I don't know if there is an ARM emulator or if code is running natively on x86 architecture - it looks pretty fast and I read it runs on eeepc devices so it does sound like there must be native execution going on?

Ingress currently crashes because of lack of OpenGL support on x86 4.0RC2, among other issues.
