I currently use the 4.0.3 thinkpad build on mu inspiron 1300 laptop.  it works great but I want to try out the 4.0.4 with arm libraries.  the thinkpad version on the android x86 website, wifi does not work.  I tried the generic test build version from tabletsx86, wifi and Ethernet appear to work but the display driver is broken.  the dmesg logs detect the video card fine and the display drivers loads and switches to native resolution fine but the gui does not load.

try the 4.0.4-eth0-gen_x86 version instead of the generic_x86 version

Did you have any luck getting JellyBean running on ESXi 5.1? My booting gets stuck at a blinking/flashing cursor right where the ANDROID logo would usually appear.
