Hello!

I am developing an app for Galaxy Tab 10.1, which has a WXGA
(1280x800) screen.

I currently run mariuz's generic Android x86 via VirtualBox under
windows 7.

I'd like to know if it is possible to configure the display so that
the aspect ratio or resolution matches that of the Galaxy 10.1 tab,
since I often use harcoded sizes in pixels, and thus the resulting app
looks different in Android x86 than in the real device.

Thanks in advance,
Samuel

You should not be using android-x86 to test. the android sdk has a built in emulator that works just fine and scales the screen for you. You should also not be using hardcoded sizes, use relative sizes so the app can work on more devices.

Thanks for your reply.

Actually, I am using android-x86 for testing because its performance
is a lot better than the AVD emulator; and since animations are an
important part of my app, I need a good way of making smooth testing.

I know that using hardcoded sizes is not a good practice, but even if
I don't use them, the app doesn't look exactly the same in the device
than in my PC, since the aspect ratio is different.

But, what do you think? Is there a way to change aspect ratio or
resolution in Android x-86?. I actually can see screen height and
width as parameters in the DisplayMetrics section in Dev
Tools>Configuration, but I don't know if there is a way to configure
them (it is fixed at 800x600).

Also, I have found that Android-x86 versions for tablets (e.g. Android-
x86 tegav) work on VirtualBox, but anyway resolution is 800x600.

If it's REALLY vital that it look right, go buy any 10.1" honeycomb tablet. The Galaxy tab 10.1 is a bit spendy, so you might be better off getting an Asus Transformer. They have almost identical hardware, but the Asus is a few hundered dollars cheaper.

Thanks again for your reply. Actually, I have a Galaxy, but we are
specting to add more members to our developing team, and in our case,
it wouldn't be convenient for us having one tablet for every member of
our team. Anyway, despite I thank your suggestion, I think talking
about my development team and buying tablets is a little bit off
topic, in relation with my question, and I don't wan to get away from
the main topic of this post.

I would like to know if it possible to do what I wan't, i.e, run
Android-x86 at a WXGA resolution, ideally via VirtualBox or other
virtualization software. Do you know if it possible? If you know and
it is possible, do you know how can I do it?

Thanks in advance.

Improving the hardware of the development computers is the best optin. then just run HC in the emulator.

There is a blog that teaches you how to
customize vbox resolution for android-x86:

Take a look. I never tried, but I believe it works.
Good luck!
