I got Android-x86 working but I can't change the wallpaper. It just crashes Trebuchet or Nova Launcher. Gallery also stops with the error "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped".

This has to be an issue with my settings and not hardware because it does it on Android-x86-4.4 r2, Android-x86-4.4 r4 and Android-x86-5.1 RC1 in both VMware Workstation and VirtualBox on both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04 (which are two different machines so not the same hardware).

Can anyone tell me if there is a setting I need to change or maybe where the default wallpaper is located so I can manually change it to another image?

I have searched for many hours trying to find the location but all I came up with is /res/drawable/default_wallpaper.jpg and there is not /res directory on these roms. I tried to search for default-wallpaper.jpg and couldn't locate that file either.

This is basically just to use one program on my Desktop computer that is only available on Android so I don't really need to get Gallery or even the selecting of a wallpaper working... but the horrible green default image doesn't match my desktop at all and I would just like to change it to something that better matches my theme since it needs to be open and visible at all times.

Thanks in advance.

This really easy to explain. Because the driver on the VM is default driver so it not support to change wallpaper. On the real machine you can change the wallpaper if it support the video driver (Full Resulotion).

Ahh... ok that makes sense... Do you happen to know where the wallpaper is stored so I can manually change it?

I'm running 4.4 r4 because on 5.1 RC1 on a VM, the google play store doesn't work .. well it sort of works but is a pain .. you have to keep clicking the search or the menu because the screen stops loading and will only "refresh" when you click on the menu or search and then hit back.

it's on the framework-res.apk. You have to extract it as zip file and replace file framework-res\res\drawable-sw720dp-nodpi\default_wallpaper.jpg and repack into zip and rename into ạpk (The framework-res.apk on the \system\framework) replace file by paste it into /system first and use root ex set 644 and root and then paste it into \system\framework restart the machine and then force stop the System UI app in Settings

Since it takes so long for these posts to actually show up, I have fixed my problem. I figure I will post my findings here just in case anyone else has this issue.

I was able to change my wallpaper by using ES File Explorer to browse to the picture I wanted to use then opened it in ES Image Browser, clicked the menu and selected "Set background"
I was able to find the wallpaper file in /data/system/users/0/wallpaper.

Tried 6.0 but ran into the "Failed to find cpu0 device node" issue so for now, I'm sticking with 4.4r4 it seems to do the job

Just go to Vesa mode, don't press enter and edit command VGA=788 (800x600) to VGA=791 (1024x768) is ok just simply enter the VESA mode

On the real machine the kernel auto driver is ok
