It doesn't work for me in Virtualbox, is it maybe just because of that?

maybe you don't have the correct version for Virtualbox...

there are versions for phone/tablet/tablet&phone/with gapps/with gapps
& arm...

make sure you have the correct version:

Why would you need to run WhatsApp on a machine that has no SIM card? Really confused!

WhatsApp is not supported on tablets for exactly that reason! There are many tablets out there that only have WiFi. No 3G or 4G. Every such user downloading the app would start complaining, and the devs would find it really irritating to reply to each and every one of them.

I'm running the asus image on my Samsung NC10  (WITHOUT the use of a virtual machine) and it says my device wasn't detected and that tablets ARE NOT currently supported... We have to tweak something to make it work (build.prop perhaps?)

Because pretty much everyone uses WhatsApp, and if using WhatsApp is the only way you have to communicate with certain people and you DO NOT have a smartphone running Android/IOS/Blackberry etc, then what can you do?

Now seriously, I don't see how having a device with no SIM card is any kind of inconvenience when it comes to using an application. Do you need a simcard to run IM apps like Talkdroid messenger?

I used the generic build of RonM and tried to fix it with build.prop. That did not work.

You could maybe try using it on Android 4.0.4 ICS with libhoudini?

Whatsapp works perfectly even on a tablet, i use it in ics x86 4.04 (ARM translator), the way to install it is through bluetstacks under windows. Install Bluestacks and then install Titanium Backup and than whatsapp ,Hmm i think you should enable whatsapp for the number and use Titanium Backup to backup whatsapp.

On the tablet again install Titanium Backup and used the BLUESTACKS backed up whatsapp and restore it on the tablet with Titanium and you should be done.

install ARM translator on your androidx86 or download from tabletsx86.org. and you can get the tutorial here : http://andromeda-x86.blogspot.com/2013/03/cara-install-whatsapp-di-android-x86.html
for additional trick. restore app first by titanium backup then restore data.
