I'm having the exact same issue on VirtualBox. However the GRUB boot screen does show up when enabling EFI in the virtual machine settings. I does not seem to be able to complete loading the OS, it just hangs there with the Android logo.

Anything I can do to debug this? I can boot in the Debug mode, but I don't know much to do from then onwards.

The problem isn't grub. It's that Android's installer and live version seem to have better compatibility than the installed version. I have this issue with the 64 bit versions and was told in short to just buy a newer machine.

There's no way of knowing where the boot process fails really because it just stops. Just know that the version you installed won't work and mostly the x64 versions of pure android are missing large portions of the true 64bit code. You may have to go with Remix or Phoenix OS as they are written a little more completely to support 64 bit machines.
