Anybody know why the Netflix app does not work on Android X86?

Martin.

It's odd how BBC Iplayer works perfectly well and that has content protection also?..

When I was testing Netflix I got the APK from APKmirror.com
I'm wondering if Netflix doesnt work because the APK they have there is arm and we might need a Netflix Apk thats for x86 architecture.

It should be easy enough to look inside the APK file using unzip or similar,
and see whether there's any code under the x86 or x86_64 subdirectories off
"lib".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_application_package is a good enough
guide to what's inside an APK file.

I did as you suggested in the lib folder in the apk there is only a "armeabi-v7a" folder.
which probably explains why it doesnt work.
I wonder where can we get an x86 supported version of the apk my guess is we need to get it from an x86 chromebook that supports android apps.

Netflix (Android TV) 4.2.1 build 1804 looks like it might be worth a try - it
certainly contains an x86 version...

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/netflix-inc/netflix-android-tv/netflix-android-
tv-4-2-1-build-1804-release/netflix-android-tv-4-2-1-build-1804-android-apk-
download/

I can't try it myself because I don't have a Netflix account and I don't have
an up-to-date enough installation of Android-x86 :)

You all are reading into it all too much. The arm netflix works just fine, but Android-x86 needs widevine support for DRM video. You can add it simply enough to the source, and build it in from there: https://github.com/BlissRoms-x86/device_generic_common/commit/c9d91ff211e59d4024b4223d1b6ee7a25ff1c707

Jon, I was digging widevine subject whole day, and realized, that those libs are not enough. They enable Widevine L3 decryption level, with is less secure way to watch encrypted content. Netflix need Widevine L1 which you can get only on device with hardware keystore and certification from Google. The bride to access this keystore is in liboemcrypto.so present on fugu. Without it, DRM will fallback to L3 support. Of course, you can't simply drop this lib - it won't work. Have you tested Netflix and it worked for you?

One more thing - Netflix also certificates devices - there are devices with L1 support without full functional Netflix. Look here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65001865&postcount=12

Pozdrawiam

Yes, it has been working since May on my Bliss-x86 distro, nothing else needed.

But have YouTube got anything better than 480p? Phone/tablet app of Netflix will work on DRM L3 device, but only at 480p. Android TV Netflix app need L1 to start.

"YouTube" => "You". Autocorrection.

In Nougat Netflix (and a few other apps) did not work until I turned on App Compatibility in Settings.

You just took wrong (non-optimal) version of APK. You should download APK for x86 platform instead of ARM one. This has nothing to do about Netflix problem (no HD video because lack of L1 widevine support.

Who me? No, I've got HD video with Netflix. Come to think of it... it seems like the first run Netflix had me download an updated apk so I may have the x86 version.

I'd love to but it's too big... I can tell you that it's named netflix-4.16.200147-release.apk it's 25mb and it came from help.netflix.com. There appears to be a link to the apk here: http://www.minixforum.com/threads/solved-netflix-app.17278/ in the #5 comment.
