What is the correct partition setting for installing Android X86 Oreo? I have tried the following but my tablet wouldn't detect the Android partition for booting:

1. Use the cgdisk tool on the Android installer and nuke all partition and then set it to 8300 (Linux FS), use EXT4, and install GRUB2. Cannot detect the Android boot partition.

2. Use Ubuntu live disk and then in GParted to set the partition to Boot and ESP. Install without reformat with GRUB2. Cannot detect the Android boot partition.

3. Same as #2 except I didn't install GRUB2. Cannot detect the Android boot partition.

4. Install Ubuntu first and then install Android on the same EXT4 partition with GRUB2. Ubuntu logo shows up instead of Android and then locks up.

If you can install Android-x86 as the only OS on the device,
I suggest you use the Auto Installation (introduced since 7.1):
Advanced options -> Auto Install to specified harddisk

It will erase all data on the chosen harddisk,
create correct partition layout and install boot loader.

To install Android-x86 after installed Ubuntu, I recommend
to install Android-x86 rpm file in Ubuntu.
The release note has explained how to do that.

Thanks for the instruction. Using Auto install worked great but ran into another issue with the kernel. I'm using a known custom kernel that worked before when I was trying to dual boot with Win10 (wifi, touch screen, etc). The working method was to copy the custom kernel from Win10 into the Android NTSF partition. However, since GRUB navigation doesn't work on my tablet (no touch), I'm reverting back to single boot of Android X86. I'm using Ubuntu Live to copy the kernel over to the Android partition. While it does copy over perfectly fine using sudo, on boot, none of the features (wifi, touch screen) works. Booting in debug mode doesn't show any obvious error message beside it saying having EXT3 compatibility issue with the partition but I didn't think much of this. Is this some kind of permission issue with the custom kernel? I already tried rebuilding another custom kernel but ran into the same behavior.

Thanks

No, I don't really know how to rebuild the custom modules. I tried using "modules_install" but having some issues. I also tried just copying the *.ko files from the out folder to /data/system/lib/modules/ but that didn't work. I notice the /lib/modules/ folders didn't even exist under system.
