I'm not experienced with QEMU; this might be related to QEMU and not this project; so this might be a useless report. Feel free to ignore and sorry in advance.

So I installed Android x86 8.1 r1 on QEMU 3.1 on a Debian Buster host. When running it with -vga virtio the it is very fast and nothing crushes, but It always has the same 1280x800 resolution, GRUB's video= command doesn't change the resolution.
With other options resolutions change, but they are way slower (especially std), even though I have a Intel GPU (UHD 620)

I have no problem to change resolution via video= cmdline.
Though I only tested QEMU 2.9.

You may also try to change the default resolution set in /etc/init.sh.
(search 1280x800)
