Hi,

I'm facing a problem while booting android from the hard drive.
I've downloaded the android-x86.iso image from www.android-x86.org and
followed the steps explained to install the image to hard drive, it
seems everything goes fine wrt installation and after installing the
grub boot loader, I restarted my board, however I don't see android
booting up as there are no messages displayed on screen.

What ve I done wrong here, appreciate help on resolving this issue.

Thanks & Regards,
~Sharad.

No.
I think your grub installation failed, but without further information,
I don't see how could we fix it.

You can switch to VT5 (Alt-F5) to see if
grub installed successfully.

Basically, you can fix it manually by any
rescue tool, like systemrescuecd.

Hi,

I had also thought the same on grub and actually tried modifying the
command line parameters,
as I could see the grub menu after powering on, however when I select
the Android-x86 image from the list,
the screen goes blank and seems the board is hung there itself because
of which I am unable to switch to VT5.

I had modified the kernel command line to have /dev/block/ram0 (this
is where the ram0 is present in android dev directory),
however there was no success. I'll try using the system rescue tool.
Appreciate help on this if anybody has got a fix on this issue.

Thanks & Regards,
~Sharad.

To switch to VT5, I mean in the installation procedure.
You can check it after installation complete and
before rebooting.

Hi,

I could switch back to VT5 and can see grub installed properly. This is what I see in VT5

grub> setup (hd0) (hd0,0)
 Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
 Checking if "/boot/stage1" exists... yes
 Checking if "/boot/stage2" exists... yes
 Checking if "/boot/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 28 sectors are embedded
succeeded
 Running "install /grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+28 p (hd0,0)/grub/stage2 /grub/menu.lst" ... succeeded
Done.
grub>

I'm trying to install android image to the first partition of hard drive which was shown in installation steps.

After grub installation is complete, I could see that Android-x86 image is installed successfully, however when I restart the board,
I don't see android running, it just seems to be hanging after selecting the Android image from the grub menu list. Appreciate your help in resolving this issue.

Thanks & Regards,
~Sharad.

Hi,

The hard drive partition is formatted as ext3 while installing android image. With the usb image, I can mount the hard drive partition.
And it has the following in it
android-2010-02-03/
---> data/ system.sfs initrd.img kernel ramdisk.img

grub/
---> menu.lst ntfs_stage1_5 stage2 android-x86.xpm.gz e2fs_stage1_5 stage1 stage2_eltorito

lost+found/

I could see the grub main page upon booting the android from hard drive, but for some reasons, its getting hung.

Regards,
~Sharad.

Are you sure your first partition is ext2/ext3?
Do you change the partition type and format
this partition to ext2 or ext3?
Could you show me fdisk -l /dev/sda ?

Partition type is proper and is set to 83, I could even see the swap partition also.
And the hard drive partition is mounted as ext3, so I believe there are no issues with the partition type and formatting.
There must be something else which is causing this problem.

Any other inputs are appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,
~Sharad.

Could you show the result of fdisk -l /dev/sda

You can switch to VT2/3 to do it.

Hi,

I'm still trying to get the android running from hard drive on my board. I could see the following messages while trying to boot from hard drive,

Booting command-list
kernel /android-2010-02-03
/kernel root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=generic-x86 acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode SRC=/android-2010-02-03/
   [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x3000, size=0x1f3cf0]

however it hangs soon after the above messages. Any idea whats going wrong here? as the same android image when used from USB, doesn't have any issues as such.

Thanks & Regards,
~Sharad.
