Please install Android (a Linux based system....) on Ext3 partition.

I have a thinkpad x220 which I recently installed windows 7 pro, partitioned the hard drive allowing 20gb for android. Installed android and am trying to run it off of the hard drive, but every time I try and start android up, it always begins at the initial configuration screen and never saves any settings or data. I set up androids partition as NTFS because the tutorial said FAT32 would not save data. Am I missing something simple? I'm pretty new at this and this is my first attempt at multiple OS's.
