I have followed the instructions (https://www.android-x86.org/documentation/virtualbox.html) to install on VirtualBox 6.1.18. I am using the android-x86-7.1-r5-k419.iso file. I am using Ubuntu 20.04.

All works. I then close the VM. The next time I run the VM I must install again from the start. There is no "persistence". I did use "Installation - Install Android x86 to harddisk".

I open and close VirtualBox using the GUI (not any form of command line).

Is there a way to install rather than having to re-install every time I re-open the VM? Thanks.

This sounds to me far more like a problem with VirtualBox than with Android-
x86.

Please give more specific details regarding how you "close the VM".

Antony.

I guess you forgot to change the boot order so
your VM still boots from the iso file (Optical).
You should change it to boot from Hard Disk.
Or, select Advanced options -> Boot from local drive
if it boots from the iso file.

BTW, you should not close the VM directly.
That may damage your data.
Use ACPI Shutdown in Machine of the menu (Hot key: Host + H)
to invoke the power off menu in Android.

Thank you for your suggestion. I changed the boot options to run from the hard drive. It was set to
run from the optical drive. I shutdown in the way you suggested: Host key + H.

Unfortunately, when I run the Android VM, VirtualBox showed a "a critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped". The /VirtualBox VMs/Android/Logs VBox.png file shows the last command to be "tGRUB loading stage1.5".

Any further help would be appreciated.

Here are some of the options I select. Hopefully this will be helpful.

Installation - Install Android x86 to harddisk.
Do not use GPT.
Select new primary partition/ bootable / type 83 - write to disk.
Reformat sda as ext4.
Install boot loader GRUB - yes.
Install system directory as read/write (also tried not doing this option).
Go into Android and setup system - wireless, select home app, etc.
Power off with Host Key and H key.
Launch VM with 'Start' button from VirtualBox (hard drive is first in boot order).
Get stuck at screen that says there is a "critical error".

Not sure what your problem is.

If android-x86 is the only OS in your VM,
try to use the "Auto Installation".
Boot from the iso and choose "Advanced options" ->
"Auto Installation".
Refer to https://www.android-x86.org/installhowto.html
for more details.
