Hi all,
i've installed the pre-built froyo on my eeePC 701. I attempt to use
my 3G USB stick, but it seems that it is not recognised as modem. A
dmesg trace shows that the stick is identified as CDROM device (no
modem).
Under Ubuntu the stick is recognised as CDROM and USB modem.
The E161 vendor-id = 0x12d1, product-id = 0x1001
Do I have to add / modify configuration parameters somewhere ?

If you use a pre-build Froyo, not sure if Chih Wei activated this
option at compile time.

So I guess there is nothing you can do yourself.

I had such a 3G modem before.
You need to eject the simulated CDROM
to activate the 3G modem.

Switch to console by Alt-F1, and issue 'eject'.

type lsusb from debug mode.
or type dmesg | grep ttyUSB*
or type dmesg | grep ttyACM*
Froyo can detect USB TV ( em28xx). But It didn't have android app to
play it.

Hi,

I installed corresponding Ice Cream Sandwich from www.android-x86.org/downloads to mine mini-notebook (Asus EeePC 701 4G),
.. and result - every thing works perfect - almost, i have no way to get internet:
Mine only internet connection access is though 3G USB Modem (HUAVEI Mobile Connect - 3G Modem).
I also have another laptop with win7u, and I tried to share internet wireless through it, but it didn't work and I'm unsure where mistake was/are (I. Android-x86 software - but from net I've read, that Wi-Fi worked for others, out-off-the-box; II. Mine skills, but couldn't found any mistakes compared to googled forums; III - broken Wi-Fi card [I'm not used it fore while]). And as I live in country side, there are no wifibars near close, to test this out. Neither there are any Ethernet cables near me. And Android with out any internet connection does really .....
So only solution appears to be to get this 3G rod working, but there is an problem. This android appears to be quite heavily striped Linux, and I have no internet connection (so wget and all the other downloads are out of question - everything must be done manually, with very limited commands and extremely low novice Unix/Linux skills). Just for mention, I'd like to achieve those with as little extra software installed as possible, to keep OS as 'virgin' clean as possible. Also, while I messed this, I noticed, some stuff happens, when, I connect modem to lappy (at least I'm quite sure, that virtual-CD will be created + something more). Mine guess is that, GAx86-ICS4.0rc1 just lacs some essential software, even if it's just an android app, for modem on\off switching (or at least, I think, it should be included with installation CD).

I found some teasers for my-own (since I have no internet connection on mine eee):
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_3G_Modem

I've also found this (NB! it's an driver download):
http://www.sakis3g.org/versions/latest/i386/sakis3g.gz
But I couldn't find a way, how to get this work (thought su ./install.sh will work, but it didn't copied files as needed, also tried 'chmod +x ./install.sh' also with 'su', but got 'Bad mode').

Mine Huawei sticks are E153 & E1752 (Yes I have two of them, but I need E1752 more, unless i'ts possible to get E153 to work with mine phone sim, so I can make phone calls and send SMS messages throught it, exactly like with mine mobile phone).

I've always found that really funny, that having your internet access device working, then provided help requires internet connection first :-D.

Hi,
You have done some good work. Nice!

However, remember Android is not a traditional
Linux distro. Android uses Linux kernel,
but most user-space tools are different.
The doc you found definitely won't work in Android.
Don't waste time on it.

What you need is a RIL library for your modem.
But this is not ready in 4.0-RC1.

Thanx for reply!
I'm sorry for long delayed response, as I didn't had no internet for couple of weeks, and I'm using google groups for first time too (not used with UI jet).
I understand that android isn't usual linux distro, I think its rather phone OS on top of linux system (and as minimal as possible). About http://www.sakis3g.org/versions/latest/i386/sakis3g.gz: it worked perfect on ubuntu (8.10 I think), and   trying to make use of it, somehow, I already understood that android lacks tools for it. But as I am new in unix systems in general & in truth I don't know nothing about them, I would like do have some more specific info about it (what is RIL libary, in short and ease understood?: https://www.google.ee/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=RIL+libary). Why I'm messing with this, well I got one wild idea to turn mine Eee into true android (quite), to build/integrate this modem into computer and use mine phone card with it. also install bluetooth handsfree on it, so I can make and answer to calls to, while I'm surfing on internet. But to be honest, I'm not sure jet, is it even possible, I took just an wild guess on it (as android already include all needed software, and USB 3G modem most essential hardware to read mine phone simcard, +android runs real fast on mine EeePC 701). I added thous links in previous post in hope to provide some portion of info for smarter guys than me (like hardware infos and how it communicates with pc and linux). Also as mutch as I know, most of ISP's and mobile companies are using huawei 3G USB modems in mine country (estonia), so it would be beneficent for all people in whole country, who likes to use thous modems with android.
