Hi all and specifically to the devs team !

This is since sometimes I've tried Froyo Android-x86 port and I have
now compiled my own version for the Acer 1825PT(Z), and soon for the
Acer 1820 series.

But what surprised me is that I could'nt find Paris Time Zone and
found out some other errors such as finding Brussels, Amsterdam and
Berlin as part of Centrale Europe ????

Could you fix this please ?

I guess I could do this myself, but I'm not accustomed with repo :
just the basic option to download and sync on my own computer, but not
on the other side... And I don't want to do any mess anywhere... ^^

By the way could you also add a "TV Out" option in the Display
Settings in case "someone" implement a HDMI ouput fonction soon or
later... ;)

Best regards,

Regarding Paris Time Zone, The option was missing in the selecting
panel and I partly solved the problem on my side !!!!

I watched out into the code of the different xml files ( pfffuiii )
and first change /packages/apps/settings/res/xml/timezones.xml.
Apparently it was enought to make it appeared in the Time Zone Display
Option and render it fonctionnal.

But then I found the same problem appeared again in many other files.
So I changed at least the /packages/apps/Setting/res/xml-fr/
timezones.xml file (where it was mentionned that Paris/Madrid/Brussels
and Berlin were in Central Europe which is not the truth).

PROBLEMS : it is also missing in the corresponding translation files,
but I could not modify them as I do not have the knowledge to
translate "Western Europe" into the other languages... ^^

What was also strange is that Paris Time Zone existed in /frameworks/
base/cores/res/res/xml/time_zones_by_country.xml.

Now it is up to you and the other guys from the other countries.

Wish this was not a political aspect... ^^

The timezones.xml file comes from the main AOSP repository maintained by Google. It requires translation into all of the languages supported by Android, so it is unlikely that any changes will be made unless they're made in the AOSP repository in order to ensure all the translations are available as well.

Hi Al,

Thank you for your reply.

I just realize that the term "Central Europe" was also use on a
another Android device I bought in France and also a GT I just receive
a few minutes ago, so I think this is a mistake due Google. But the
missing Paris Time Zone is unexplained, as I have it both on my Galaxy
Tab bought from the UK, and an Archos 70IT bought in Paris, France !!!

Will you correct this by yourself or do you want me to send the file
to you ? I'm not accustomed with repo push, so I can send it by mail
if you want ???

Archos are french so I'd expect them to make sure Paris was included :).

I've checked on a couple of devices (Nexus One, Motorola Defy) and Paris isn't included so I'm guessing Samsung have made their own modification.

I'd be against us changing it in our repository for three reasons;

1) We don't have the translations for all the languages. I don't know if Paris is Paris in all languages, it may be the same as London where in other languages it's different (e.g. in french it's Londres), and without all of the translations we couldn't make a full change.

2) Not having it doesn't affect functionality. You can still select the timezone, you just need to use another city.

3) It would take us away from the AOSP repository. This isn't a good idea because we have to re-integrate any changes from the AOSP as opposed to being able to pull the file without modification.

If you want to submit a patch, I'd suggest you do it to the main Google repo, that way it can filter down to all of the Android projects and not just our one.

Well, I was not talking about the town Paris which hopefully is
correctly translated in other languages (havn't got time to check all
the files during that night).
As I said the name Paris exists in all the xml files, but simply not
displayed in the Time Zone list and not activated. That's not very
fair !
Activating Paris in the Time Zone is just a matter of modifying ONE
file !!!

Imagine, if this is the case for your own town or country, you
wouldn't like it, and even if you know you can select another choice
you would feel... huuumm... upset...

What I was talking about is the fact that Brussels, Madrid, Amsterdam,
Berlin and Paris are located in Central Europe (according to Android)
while these towns are in Western Europe truely, and this is THIS PART
which has to be corrected and translated. And I underdstand you can't
do much about it except you could more easyly submit the problems to
the main Google repo than I could do... ^^ ;)
We are not located in in the Balkany region, as far as I know or
geopolitic has changed very quickly.

And it is merely a matter of accuracy and rigor for Google, if not a
question of brand image (not the best expression, but I guess you
understand what I mean).

Imagine what Microsoft or Apple or any other major Brands would think
about Google if they see that Google don't even know the difference
between Western and Central Europe, and that it just forgot Paris !!!
^^

This have not been noticed since now, but I guess our political
peoplew won't appreciate this as they are kind of "touchy"... :D

None of the patches I have submitted to the AOSP have been accepted, and as this is something you feel passionate about I would suggest you are probably the best person to make the submission to the AOSP repo.

Ok Al,

I won't bother you anymore with this point.

I guess I'll have to get an appointment with a political delegation
and my Ambassador... :D

Just kidding.

In any way, this is not a good "Image" of Google... ^^

I won't stop developing for Android-x86 anyway. ;)
I starting having fun with it !

Is this the same problem of hierarchy with AOSP repo concerning the
creation of just a HDMI output display option in the parameters panel,
just kind of an envelop that we could feel in later ?

Do I need to create another thread for this ? One thread per
problems ?

Best to go for another thread. I'll reply once you've send the details of what you're proposing.

Seems like a good idea to me.

LXDE is looking for a new maintainer of LXPanel. So if you are a

Hi Arobase40,
I agree with Al, but I also
understand your feeling.

As you said, it's just a small change.
So please send the patch to me.
I'll add it to our repository,
and help you to upload to AOSP.
(though Google merges patches
very slowly at this moment)

This is the best way I can help you.

THANKS YOU very much Chih-Wei !!!

I'll send you the patch by mail.

About my contribution concerning the 1825PTZ and other such machines.
There no problem for me to do it.

Just is that the definition files are a bit messy at the moment. I'll
explain this in my next mail and will open a new thread about my
project of creating a more generic port of Android-x86... ^^

"The issue was raised by one of our French developer. To avoid
political issue, I suggest to add it ASAP."

I guess we just avoided a political crisis... ;)

And I'm not quite there is no side-effects on the applications when
this Paris Time Zone is missing. I'm still investigating on my UK
Galaxy Tab where this Time Zone is also missing...

Thank you again
