Hi,
I wanted to know if vmware tools are available for android-x86. I am
running it on vmware player version3.
If not, is there a way to transfer files from the mobile to the host
os.(similar to adb). Only adb is present in
host os(Windows Vista) and I installed android sdk there. Is there a
way from androidx86 terminal to do this?

Everything related to VMWare are to be asked to VMWare company, I
guess.
Concerning adb, I think you need to modify your adb_usb.ini file in
your "home" directory. But I don't know the value is needed for
Android-x86... Sorry.

You have the source, you can port it to android-x86. Or, more simpler, just copy the adb binary and all necessary libs it needs from a linux host to android-x86,

May not be what you intended, but....
Referencing: http://www.android-x86.org/documents/sdcardhowto if you don't have the /etc/vold.fstab file, or if you don't have the
SDCARD boot parameter, then.... any USB key you plug into the host
will appear as an SDCard in the Android OS. This does require that
you enable USB-Controller in vplayer.
