Hmm, an interesting finding.
I just noticed actually we didn't use wpa_supplicant_6 at all.
I thought it was like ipv6. It's not, it means v0.6.x release.
To use it, you have to set
WPA_SUPPLICANT_VERSION := VER_0_6_X
We don't have this setting in any target in our repositories.

In the 0.5 release we used (external/wpa_supplicant),
I don't see problem with WPA2
(I used WPA2 in my home every day).

Seems we need to switch to wpa_supplicant_6 as AOSP.
But it needs more work and testing.
The mentioned patch is already in upstream (master and gb).
I think we could pend it until 2.3.

I'm with you in not seeing problems with WPA2, so I'll close at as "Won't Fix" with a note saying it'll be in 2.3+ as it's already upstream.
