I consistently get Grub error 17 upon booting despite reinstalling in all variations. I eventually formatted and merged all partitions into one by using a Gparted livemedia disk, then tried installing _86 to this new partition. Nothing changed.
after browsing a !lot! of ubuntu forums, I ran a livemedia disk of Linux Mint, ran boot repair and got a boot info script. Here's the link : http://paste2.org/kBG3VI4F

Any ideas? I'm pretty stumped at this point :/
All answers appreciated,
Thanks for your time:)

Not sure why you'd be getting just sda3 instead of sda1...

Could you reformat sda to ext4 - get a fresh boot-info script.
Then try and install again and if the sane error - get another boot-info to compare

Also on the above  note some SSD,USB,  and SDCards don't partition properly..

Yeap. What is the best filesystem type to use?

sda3 is sda1 here, I merged all the partitions because I didn't need any partitions. I'll try that, but I have low hopes. ext4 has never helped me before.

In your first log the sda3 is type NTFS but
you formatted it into ext3.

/dev/sda3 * 2,048 974,850,047 974,848,000 7 NTFS / exFAT / HPFS

That's an explicit error causes boot failure.

In the second log the partition type is corrected:

/dev/sda3 * 2,048 974,850,047 974,848,000 83 Linux

I can't see an explicit error.
But it's strange you don't have sda1, sda2
but only have sda3.
I just guess the installer may have bug
that can't handle this case.
I suggest you delete sda3 and re-create it
as sda1.

Besides, the 5.1-rc1 is very old and deprecated.
Please use the latest 6.0-rc2.

Because he "merged" the partitions.  delete them all and create a new partition. Should be sda1.

Ext4 for anything higher then KitKat... You can get away with ext3 in lollipop.... But 4 works fine...

You can probably use a parted live disk or use fdisk manually in terminal; to remove sda3 and make it as sda1

I originally used a 6.0 rom but got messages saying "google services has stopped working" before i could even get past the set up.

Somehow got this mess to work by messing around with more variations. If anybody is reading this with a similar error, my only adviceee is pay extra attention to whether your partition is being formatted the way you intended, and good luck.

Thanks everyone for the replies, they ultimately got me here :)

Good to hear you got it done.

On the Google services, I had that happen to me, if you just let it go,
It updates itself (Eventually) and will start working...
