In my case I'm not so ambituos, and I'm not planning to use a Simulator, no android automotive API to use in my case by now. I run android-x86 in my old Chuwi vx8 32 for a long time, working good, only GPS (built in broadcom GPS chip that I got to load a kernel driver from Android-IA but I don't know how to activate via rfkill) is not integrated,, but I workaround using a USBGPS, and BT HFP client.
I got the HFP and PhoneBook profiles working (tested by a sample apk) but no stable apk to manage this profiles are available. Thats mainly why I want to test Android automotive because AFAIK this function is OOTB with the Automotive UI (you can tell).
Thats why I ask if Android-x86 Pie can compile the aosp_car_x86-userdebug target.
Speaking about SW architecture I came across this info..... really interesting.
