Update kernel only?

I already have android 7.1-r1 installed on my machine.  Is there an easy way of updating the kernel only?  I rebuilt the kernel with some patches, and I don't want to reinstall the entire image...

You need to replace kernel and modules

I was hoping there was a way to replace the kernel through ADB or similar without having to put it into an ISO.

I'm thinking it might be possible if i boot into debug mode, prior to the final mount of the android FS (system and userdata), and copy from USB or SD card...
