So there's been talk and talk about a marketplace app that would list
only free software apps...

Someone went ahead and did it:
http://f-droid.org/

:)

It seems they also sucked in all the apps that I had started listing
on the Koumbit wiki so their list should be pretty complete :) :)

I only noticed it today, but it also lead me to this nice video of the
Nook color:

Lots of fun ahead :)

Cheers,

Fabian

Hi Fabian,

F-Droid.org looks interesting but I wonder if there are many apps that
aren't on the Android Marketplace. I've already installed it and it
works great!

The Nook Colour looks like a real bargain. I wonder when it will be
sold in Canada?

Hi Leslie,

The goal of FDroid is not to have more apps than the Android
Marketplace (although that would be great!).

I think its goal is to make Free software available in a clear way, to
as many people as possible. Its server is also Free software so in
essence you could use this any way you can. I can see companies
installing this in their own infrastructure to distribute their owns
apps without the restrictions imposed by the Marketplace.

It's also another alternative for developers that can't submit their
free software to the Marketplace because of geographic restrictions or
financial requirements.

Last and not least, for "unapproved" devices it may be the only legal
way to install software in a convenient way. SlideMe is another great
alternative and at some point they made their source code available
freely but efforts to develop it didn't yield much results.

This is changing every day so I have a hard time following it all but
the above is my current take on it :)

Cheers,

Fabian
