Hi everyone,

As some of you may know I always favor using free software and non-
Google-cloud services when available :)

One question I get asked a lot when discussing this with friends and
other geeks is how to break free of the Google cloud when you're using
an Android phone. I've recently tested the service at http://my.funambol.com
and I must say I am impressed. I was mostly interested in contacts
sync so that's what I've tested so far.\

If anyone tries it here or installs their own server I'd be interested
in hearing your experiences.

Cheers,

Fabian

Leaving the Google-cloud to go to the Funambol-cloud, what's the point?
As long as you're not running you're own 'private cloud' based on open-source software, this is the same thing for me.

Precisely. I thought that was obvious.

The point here is you can actually test compatibility/features with
their web service (and stay there if you wish so), before spending the
effort to set your own. I'd favor setting your own but failing that, I
prefer trusting Funambol's storage than Google's data
harvesting/analyzing machine.

Cheers,

So if I am understanding correctly is this alternative cloud is better
for developers but you want non developers to participate because
Google cloud is a harvesting machine. Well my response is no thank
you. At least with Google I know what is being done with my data as
they spell it out quite clearly in thier TOS. I have-no problem with
Google computers reading my email to "Target" ads which I have trained
myself to ignore or to create clever anonymous analytics.

What does this other cloud do with my data? Are their TOS as clear as
Google?

I'll add this: between two clouds, I'd rather use the one I can administer on the web, that has a pretty good uptime than the alternative, AND has tight integration into the Mobile OS - Google Apps FTW, in my case, MobileMe for Apple, and... what for WinPho7?

I should have looked at Funambol before I replied. Yes it does look
very nice and when I see open source anything I get excited. I might
have to check this out whenever I get some spare cycles. My point is
still valid though as I could not find any TOS or EULA regarding
Funambol other than using the website itself. Perhaps these terms are
not expressed until I sign-up.

My limited experience

On the server: SOGo (email, contact and calendar back-end) + Funambol connector (optional)

On your Android: Native mail or K9 (emails), CardDav Sync (CardDAV contacts sync directly with SOGo), Calendar Sync (CalDAV calendar sync directly with SOGo), Funambol Android App (never tried)

We use SOGo at work and it works well. I use samsung's native email app and calendar sync for work stuff. Never tried CardDav but I know it's an option. Not doing much "customer contact" stuff on my phone what I really wanted the most was calendar and mail. I never tried the Funambol way either.

For non-work stuff, I prefer the google cloud ;)

Full disclosure: I work at Inverse who leads SOGo's development but I work on another open source project there not SOGo. So I guess I'm a little biased but not too much ;)
