Finally!
Rogers today pushed a long awaited update for the HTC Magic, jumping from Android version 1.5 to 2.1.
The update was smooth and the phone seems somewhat snappier and the display even "crisper".
I am pleased that it finally happened.
I hope other Magic owners will also have a good experience.

Marc Bélanger
I'm happy to be updated to 2.1 on my Rogers Magic phone. It is a
definite improvement in many respects and seems a bit faster, although
that may be due to switching my desktop from DXTop to Launcher Pro.
I wonder if anyone else has the same issues I have though - when I
plug it into any computer to charge it it semi-reboots. That is, it
freezes and goes back to the "HTC, quietly brilliant" screen. After a
minute or so it continues the reboot and works fine from then on. When
connected to a charger this never happens.
Also Google Navigation, which worked perfectly for a while, now causes
a reboot (or semi-reboot) every time I try to use it and has become
totally unusable. I've removed the updates to Google Maps and
reinstalled them. No change. Pity, it was so handy before.
Any suggestions would be welcome!
Thanks,
Leslie Anne

I found an easy root method, UniversalAndroot, on the Android in
Canada website, which I apparently successfully implemented on my HTC
Magic. Strangely it resolved the issue with Google Maps Navigation,
which now works fine, and there is no longer and problem with reboots
when connecting to a computer for charging or data transfer. I'm
happy!
I haven't gone into alternate ROM's but would like to try out a
wireless tether app. Unfortunately I haven't found one that works well
for me. What do you recommend? Also, can you use this kind of utility
to share a WiFi connection with other devices, or only a 3G one?
Thanks!
Leslie Anne
Oh I think the rooting is genuine, at least two "root only" apps
request and receive root permissions on my phone.
I'm not that interested in learning the Android command line - DOS,
UNIX and LINUX were enough for me. I just want to be able to tether
without having to install an app on the client. Yes, I know Froyo
includes that and maybe it will come my way in the new year.
Meanwhile...
The UniversalAndroot App seems to work well enough for me, but I'm
still a bit hesitant to try a ROM replacement. Call me chicken (cluck,
cluck). I tried "Wireless Tether for Root Users" and it seems to start
but I don't know if it does DHCP or I have to assign static IP's. In
any event I have only been able to see the SSID but not connect with
it using my iPod Touch and a laptop. Any help with that?
