I am trying to organize momentum around this. Your comments or involvement would be appreciated.

Per the page below, PureMobile is waiting for details. I'd guess around $500. It's also not clear which model they will carry.

Out of curiosity, what handset would most people exactly want? I find most handsets are missing the one thing I'd want, today the Samsung Galaxy Pro seems to be the model that has it all (keyboard, front and back cam, dual flash), it would need to be unlocked, support world roaming and hackable OS. I'm still hoping Google will release a Nexus Two with these specs, but they're being compromised by the carriers.

It's clear that front-facing camera is nice to have on a phone (since
the iPhone 4 has it) but let's face it, no one use it.
Mostly because no one want to do a video-chat outside and mobile
networks are not good enough for a good experience.
At home, there are much better screens and cameras to do video-chat.

I think front-facing cameras and video-chat are much more relevant on
tablets, set-top boxes, laptops, desktops, ... than mobile phones.

I don't think Samsung phones are good for hacking, flashing,
rooting, ...
HTC phones are much more open.

The HTC G2 from T-mobile has an extra chip specifically designed to
prevent root.

It depends from where you look at the problem.
The chips doesn't prevent root, it's just restoring the system after a
reboot so users won't have a bricked phone.
For sure, the G2 is not as open as the Nexus One but the Android
community is already working hard on this phone.

I think HTC is more open because they usually publish the kernel
source code of their devices here: http://developer.htc.com/.

The Desire is a very nice phone.

So I went by the friendly Bell store and had a hands on look at the
new Desire Z. The screen is or almost is identical to my Nexus One;
very nice, bright and responsive. The phone is quite heavy and bulky
as result of the slide-out keyboard and the casing is strong. The HTC
UI is not much different than stock Android as far as I can tell so it
is not a concern to me.

Bell will only sell the phone with a contract even if you pay the full
retail of $499.00 despite the website saying you can purchase without
a contract. The salesman said I could pay full price, sign up with a
day to day contract and then cancel the contract the next day. I
would still be responsible for a $35.00 activation fee. Weird.

I personally would not buy this phone as I have no need for a physical
keyboard, I use Swype. Still this is probably the best Android phone
available from a Canadian carrier as of today. My Rogers kiosk
refuses to open a Galaxy S box to demo so I have not been able to
compare.

Was it a regular Bell store or a "corporate services" one? sometimes the "corporates" are lesser bastards when you want to buy one outright.

A guy at my job bought it from Bell and I like it a lot, especially
for the hardware keyboard that I miss on my Nexus One.
If you want to get it without contract maybe you can try the web
site.
Guys at the stores are paid to sell you contracts...
