Converting .ts videos for 800x480 Android-compatible formats ?

Hi
I was wondering if anyone here has succeeded transcoding .ts
(transport stream, recorded from OTA broadcast) video to Android-
compatible formats ?
I gave it a few short tries using Handbrake and ffmpeg following
various online guides but nothing seems to produce anything else than
"can't play this video". Transcoding to mkv always crashed HB or gives
an error in ffmpeg even using its latest version from PPA in Trisquel
(same as Ubuntu 11.04 but free)
Any hints would be appreciated.
