Espresso: disable animation on ProgressBar

An intermediate ProgressBar starts animating automatically when onAttachedToWindow(), Espresso would then think the app is not idle and wait for the UI to be stable until time out. Does anyone know how to correctly disable the animation on intermediate ProgressBar?
