I'm trying to make the most basic smallest slow phone possible to use the google wallet and railcard app. I was looking at other OS and hacker oriented boards but the only suitable one (the kite board) doesn't seem to be available. Has anyone managed to get anything similar to android go working on the zero? If not I'll have to go for the 4.

What do you mean about "working on the zero"?
Well, I'm not sure if there is a repo from community supporting Android Go for Raspberry Pi.
