Fast Dormancy is a mechanism that enables mobile devices to notify the
base stations when the radio resource allocated to the device is no
longer in use, so that the radio resource could be immediately
released other than waiting for a timeout event.

From the perspective of the mobile device, since maintaining radio
resource consumes extra power, employing Fast Dormancy would save
power and thus increase battery life.

Currently Fast Dormancy is supported by base stations, does anyone
know how to invoke this feature on android platforms?

Thanks.

Gary,

essentially this is a feature supported on the modem stack of the UE. I know of the implementation of this at the NAS layer of stack of one of the prominent wireless company. there are few changes both at the NAS/AS and down but shouldnt have anything at android layer ... Android gurus of this list may confirm any android dependencies ..

Thanks,
Arun

Further its an optional feature not part of 3GPP R5 specs or so i believe. Mostly carriers in Europe viz Orange and Vodaphone insist from their OEMS to have this and part of the thier TA approvals. ...its much of a proprietary implementation ...

Thanks Arun.
Do you know if there is any API exposed to the android layer that can
control the fast dormancy feature?
My problem is that I want to find a way to use this feature explicitly
on android.
