The maps application is owned by Google, it is not part of the open source android platform.  You'll need to install it yourself.

Is there any place to get the Maps app legitimately? Or is the only
option to extract it from the SDK--presumably in violation of the
terms & conditions?

Actually I'm even more interested in the com.google.android.maps API.
Is there any (legal) way to use apps depending on it on a device
running the open source code?

Thanks,

Jim

Sorry, I really don't know much about this; generally you would need to talk with Google about getting the binaries for these things.

Anyone know how we'd go about contacting Google to get these
binaries? I've looked through the contact options and I don't see a
general e-mail address for these types of inquiries. And looking for
specific staff members to e-mail is probably the wrong approach to
this. *chuckle*

I ended up at http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Groups-Guide, but
this is more of a help for Google groups in general and not Android-
specific.

So I'm just a bit lost... *sigh*
