I just found an interesting thing about fastboot. (And this discovery
was painful for me :P)
These two commands are both valid:

fastboot boot <file> (harmless)
fastboot flash boot <file> (DANGEROUS!!!)

Be careful when you are playing with fastboot, specially when you
don't have the boot image of the connected device.

While "fastboot boot" makes the phone boot from the file, "fastboot flash boot" will flash the selected image to the boot area of the phone. That's the difference.
