Play audio over an active phone call, so other end can hear it

Hi everyone,

I am investigating building a custom firmware off of the Android base
and have a question about possible functionality.
Is it possible to modify the framework to play audio over an active
phone call, so the other
end can hear it?

For example:
A and B are talking on the phone.
A presses a button that pulls audio from a resource and plays it over
the phone call to B.

If so, any thoughts on what to look at to learn more?

(I asked this on Android Developers here: http://is.gd/27Xij but
wanted to clarify whether this is possible at a lower level of code,
or whether hardware limitations will prevent this entirely.)

I believe Dream and Sapphire hardware do not allow Android to access
the in-call audio stream. What you're investigating is not possible
in a portable way.
