You need to add the PBAP service in the init.rc file, so that during
Bluetooth on PBAP service will register.
And need PBAP support BT device ( Car kit) to test PBAP.

1. Can we not use two mobile phones and transfer Contact information
to other mobile in order to test this?
In web, they have not only mentioned only Car kit, but also mentioned
it can be used between two mobile phones.

2. is there any way to check during run time, whether this service is
running or not?
i used "sdptool browse local" check the services.

Hi Bheemsen,

If I use two mobile devices for communication, if one device acts as PBAP server, how to  make other device as client?
or it is just whoever sends data will be server and receiver will be the client?

just i need clarification, since I dont have car kit or other devices.

Thanks

Hi Guru,

The PBAP role is not based on who sends or receives the data (as both devices will send/receives data, e.g. req/res) but it is based on a specific role that a device plays.  The PBAP is especially used in the automotive Hands-Free use case where an onboard terminal device (typically a Car-Kit installed in the car) retrieves Phone Book
objects from a Mobile device (typically a mobile phone).

The objects may be missed call list, call received and call dialed list, phone book that PBAP client (car kit) will get from PBAP server (phone).

Some of the typical use cases may be:
The PBAP client access the list of phone book entries stored in the PBAP server.
The PBAP client down load one or several phone book entries from the PBAP server.
The PBAP client access the call histories stored in the PBAP server.
The PBAP client access the Subscriber number information stored in the PBAP server.

So you need a device which plays a specific role of PBAP client to test PBAL server (in Android)

Hi Bheeemsen,

Thanks for the valuable information.

1. I got your point. Also can we make one mobile phone as "Client" and other as server.
i.e If there any way to make one mobile phone as "Client". OR I have to use PBAP client which are available?

2. "packages/apps/Bluetooth/src/com/android/bluetooth/" pbap what exactly this will do? what is the purpose of this section of code.

Thanks
Guru.

Hi Guru,
No, you cannot make mobile phone as "client", you need to have device which acts as PBAP client.

hi Bheemsen,

I got car kit for testing purpose. I will check it.

Do you have PBAP specification document? I tried to download from
http://www.bluetooth.com/NR/rdonlyres/58FC38BF-9ED6-49FF-81CF-E0B95B130D72/7761/PBAP_SPEC_V10r00.pdf

but i am unable to download it. I have html version of it, it is not displaying diagrams properly!

Please provide me any other link or can you send me that document if you have.

once again thanks for valuable information.

HI Bheemsen,

I test using car kit.

Scenario:

1. I called from other cell to my cell, car kit is announcing the
incoming call details. --> successful state. This should be the
behavior right?
2. I call from my cell to other, in this case my cell is rebooting. --
> failed state.

currently i am analyzing the captured logs.

is there any reason for case-2( failed case). whether have to do any
changes in the code?

Hi Bheemsen

Actually car kit is not announcing the callers name, it is announcing
only phone number.
I am just thinking where i went wrong in configuration!

Manual is telling " if mobile support phone book profile, then car kit
should announce the name of the caller".

Please let me know if you have any idea on this?

Thanks

Hi Guru,
Not sure why the phone would reboot when you dial to another cell.
BTW have your tried a case where phone is connected to a BT headset and then you dial to another cell and see if the phone reboots in this case as well.

One more thing that you can try these scenarios with another phone (non android) which has PBAP server role to see what is the behavior with the car kit for outgoing call and incoming call.

Bheemsen

If I see the log, it is sending Content of type 1, which is phone
book, but its size it is showing 4 only.

D/ContactsProvider( 1305): query uri: content://com.android.contacts/data/phones
V/BluetoothPbapVcardManager( 1387): getPhonebookSzie size = 4 type = 1
D/BluetoothPbapObexServer( 1387): search by number, size=2 offset=0
searchValue=43574957575452505449574849
V/BluetoothPbapObexServer( 1387): itemsFound =0

is there any problem with this and showing itemsFound=0, means it is
not finding contact number in this. is that my understanding is
right?

Hi Bheemsen,

Whether support of particular feature depends on the implementation -
like
when incoming call comes, then only the contacts will be downloaded to
the client or all contacts get downloaded when both client and server
gets paired?

Well I got the PBAP connection happening.... now just have to figure out how to actually view the phone book on the linux PC.

my setup was pbap server android, linux PC/ubuntu with bt dongle, and I see the notification coming in for the PBAP and the pop-up dialog for acceptance of that request from linux PC, but yet don't see the contacts on linux PC...

for anyone's reference find attached the statically built obexd's obex-client application - which exists under test/obex-test directory.

still working on getting the obex-test and pbap-client working -- seems to be stuck with wrong version of dbus.
