I'm just curious, is it possible to put the cupcake branch that is
currently being developed on a Dev G1 device or a G1 with Dev boot
loader? I know this is a proceed at your own risk kind of territory,
but I'm wondering if this is some kind of feasible option?
Thanks
Robert

It's not possible at this point. We're hoping to fix that in the future.

Sounds good, whats currently stopping the ability to have builds made
for phones?

Building for the Dev Phone 1 requires to start with a Dev Phone 1
running a similar version of Android, as some of the files on the
system image need to be preserved *and* need to be compatible with the
version of Android you're installing.

So the dev phone 1 is systematically different then a rooted rc30 with the dev bootloader?  Just trying to understand how the two phones are different and how I can get mine the same as the dev phone to run some unstable builds

Ok, I can understand that, but what I read in another post is that the cupcake branch is significantly different the the current build, so will this be an update pushed out to g1 (and other emerging devices) or are we going to go the way of winMo and be using different builds?

Ultimately providing updates is up to the carrier and/or device manufacturer, since they customize the software for their phone (for example T-Mobile has the myFaves app which takes care of managing your contacts).  That said, there have already been a numbered of updates OTAed for the G1, and probably that wouldn't stop.

Good to hear don't want to have to left out in the dust, with that said if I got my device unlocked from tmo could I use plain update built from the source or would I have to still wait for official releases from a carrier?

If your G1 has the test keys in the otacert instead of the release
keys, then yes you sure could install build from source (assuming the
source builds, which I believe at the time of this writing it does).
This has nothing to do with being unlocked with T-mo, as the only
unlocking T-mo will deal with is sim unlocking. Using Android software
not signed with the release keys is unsupported by T-mo and for good
reason. If you have the same SPL as the Dev Phone 1 installed on the
G1 (aka 'engineering' SPL), then for all intents and purposes on this
discussion group you might as well say you are using a DP1.

On a somewhat related note, is there any word on how or even if DP1
Android builds will be updated? Will Google/Brightstarcorp roll out
update files or are developers expected to build their own?

Jason

I am building the cupcake branch and would like to test on my DP1.

Which files need to be preserved from the original system image?
