troubleshoot: how to start on boot & access menu?

Hi,
I have Open VPN Settings installed on a HTC Evo 4G LTE android phone running CyanogenMod 10.2. I'm having a couple problems. First of all, the Play Store says that VPN Settings will start on boot so I automatically connect to my VPN server. This feature isn't working, however. From screenshots on Google Play, it also appears that there are "Advanced" button (and other options) that should appear when I press the menu button on the phone. My phone, however, doesn't have a hardware menu button, and I don't see any software menu button in the app, so I can't figure out how to access those options.
Can anybody help me with with either of these problems? Thanks,
