I wanted to mention this application I recently came across, it's called MapDroyd and it uses maps from the openstreetmaps project.

What's cool about it is that it's simple to use, you can view maps offline, it can download maps automatically from regions,
it can rotate maps and will show a little red x where you're at, so if you just need a simple way of navigation around in the streets, this is worth a look:)

I should also mention that you need to install ContentDroyd along with MapDroyd for downloading capabilities.
