Starting at Login on Mac

The preferences have a checkbox to start at login. If I try to check
the box it says "Please use your system Startup Manager".
I have to ask -- why?
Why can't I check the box and _you_ (the program) do the right thing.
Other apps can do this. If you can run on a Mac you can add an app to
start at Login without making me open the System Prefs and drag in the
app.
