I'm making a static page in the group to organize the category
suggestions. We can leave comments on the page to discuss changes.

Click on http://groups.google.com/group/android-network-awards/web/category-suggestions
- or copy & paste it into your browser's address bar if that doesn't
work.

I took out Travel and temp replaced it with best UI design. I think
travel is similar to GPS. Maybe travel can be combined with reference?

Can't edit either...

Missing one categorie, the 'news apps'. i.e the dutch app nu.nl
(Biggest newssite in the netherlands). Or like CNN's (unofficial) app?
Or maybe even a Android site Android app?

Just a suggestion..

Antonio, can you try again?  I changed your status to manager and I think  that should allows you to edit.  I can make anyone manager that wants to edit the document.

I think there should be a news category.  I thought we had one.

I think we can remove a category like best use of barcode or best ui design.

Agreed, I think it is overlapping.  There are quite a few news apps.  I will switch those categories.

Hi,

sorry for not being to active in ANA but we are starting up our
website (http://androidpt.com).

I've one question about the way the apps are selected. It's by vote of
all members? Can we suggest apps? For example for the Best Media
Player i'll suggest RockOn (http://abrantix.org/rockon-
screenshots.php), for Best fitness app i'll suggest SportyPal, for
Best Organization/Productivity App i'll suggest Note Everything and
for Best GPS app i'm using NDrive but is only in beta release for the
moment.

Best regards,
Miguel (AndroidPT 2.0)

Yes, you can suggest apps. I'll also ask Taylor to change your status
so you can write them directly on the page. For now I will add yours.
At some point in the next few days, we as a group are going to have to
refine all categories down to 5 nominees and allow the community to
suggest the 6th & 7th.

Antonio Wells

Hey Group Members, please add your app recommendations to this
categories thread. According to our dates, categories and up to 5 apps
per category should fill each category by the 20th. Since some have
more than 5, we'll have to narrow them down.

wimbet

Thanks for updating the list Antonio and Scott. If anyone else needs
access to edit the page let us know.

The easiest method is to simply leave a comment with your
suggestions. Multiple people are watching this page and can add them
to the list.

Looks like we might have trouble with a few categories.

6. Best VoiceMail App
7. Best News app
10. Best Reference app

There are also a few with only 1-2 entries. Maybe we will end up back
with 25 categories if we don't have enough entries to vote on.

I think Google Places Directory can be loosely put under GPS
category. Also maybe we should have a cutoff time, say Sunday at
Midnight, where if there aren't 5 apps i that category, we cut it?

I'm missing OpenIntents applications!
Ok, not all of them need to be there, but so far there is NONE???
In total we have over 400,000 downloads from Market, so they can't be
too bad...

Here are the applications:
http://www.openintents.org/en/download

I would put them into the following categories:
7. Best News app:
- OI News Reader

13. Best Organization/Productivity App:
- OI Notepad
- Timesheet

14. Best security app
- OI Safe
- Obscura

18. Best utility app
- OI File Manager
- OI Flashlight
- OI Countdown
- OI Convert CSV
- OI Voice Notes
- OI About

20. Favorite developer or dev team
- OpenIntents (OI Notepad, OI Flashlight, OI Shopping list, OI File
Manager, OI Safe, OI News Reader, OI Countdown, OI Update, Obscura,
SplashPlay, Timesheet, OI Voice Notes, OI Convert CSV, OI About, OI
TimeXchange for Timesheet)

- Peli :-) (OI Notepad, OI Flashlight, OI Shopping list, OI File
Manager, OI Countdown, OI Convert CSV)

24. Best shopping app
- OI Shopping list

I'm further missing a category for "SplashPlay" (guitar tuition
application) - where could this be put into?

Thanks for taking our applications into consideration :-)

I've suggested NDrive for BEST GPS app but there is not anymore in the

Hi All,

I am pretty much in agreement with the exception of a few applications
and there is one more category that I feel we need to add.

My app recommendations:
3. Best Entertainment app
* Magic 8 Ball
* Fortune Cookie
* Beebplayer

11. Best WOW Factor App

* IBM Seer
* Metal Detector
* Beeb Player

13. Best Organization/Productivity App

*Shuffle

14. Best security app

* Secrets by Google
* Auto Lock

16. Best GPS app

* Qype

30. Best UI design

* News Rob- for simplicity and ease of use.

For me the most glaring omission is that we are not acknowledging
websites who make custom versions for mobile as there are clearly some
that do better than others. This is the future of the mobile web and
I believe it at least should be included as an award.
My suggestions are the following:

31. Best Mobile Website
* BBC Mobile
* Yahoo Mobile
* Wikipedia
* Twitter
* Google Mobile

I did a review and overview of the browser market and some of the top
websites- although am sure that there is more around.

Totally down with that too.  We don't need to have 25 categories as much as we'd like to.  We can always add more next time around.  Let's nail it down and make an announcement!

Nailing down categories was the goal by Monday 7/20. Populating the categories with 5-7 nominated apps was this Monday 7/27 goal. We do have some work to do in trimming. After we get 5-7 per category, an announcement is appropriate...

Actually the internal polling makes sense, slightly more work though,
but gives us our 5-7 apps per category, plus they can be reset and
used for the big vote.

Sounds ok to me.  If we do it, we need to make sure it stays internal so people are not confused about the actual vote.  I'd suggest trying to complete them in 24-48 hrs.

I agree, keeping it internal is going to be VERY important. If our pre-poll polling leaks it out it would really confuse the average user.

yeah - let's do a "dry run" for ourselves and give a window for voting.  At least for the categories where we have more than 5.  Send out an announcement from here, give 24 hours or so to vote and then pull it down.

After that, we get ready to release the nominees and turn it over to the fans.

Thanks for including our Camera ZOOM product in the best camera app
category.

Could we request you change the casing on all documentation to Camera
ZOOM with capitals. Small point I know, but some people have been
confused by the naming of the app in the past thinking it just relates
to a zoom feature on the stock camera - so we think the casing makes
it more obvious that this relates to a separate application.

to Android Network Awards
Hi,

thanks all for your work, but to me the selected applications still
look random and arbitrary. I may be biased towards OI applications,
but leaving that aside, why should a group of few pre-select what the
broader audience likes to choose as the winner? Tastes can be very
different.

Aren't there any hard criteria that would tell: this application will
take part, and this will not take part? For example, based on Market
downloads, or Market rating? This would give a far more neutral pre-
selection and less biased by the tastes of a few who happen to run
this "Android Network Awards"...

For example:
Who decided that "OI Safe" should be included in your list, and not
"OI Shopping list", even though both have comparably good ratings, but
OI Shopping list has far more downloads?

I think that for the next one around, we'll be incorporating a "nomination" of sorts.  This way, we're not the only people deciding who gets in.

Also, I believe that the bigger the network is, the better in terms of finding great apps.  For about a week or so, we've been compiling names of apps.  If it hasn't been closed down, I see no reason why we can't add it.

If you can let me know what the nomination process is (when it's finalised), I can add links to the apps listed on AndAppStore so people can vote/nominate.
