will present on the Replicant project and the
new f-droid repository for free open source software. He would like to have
an open discussion about different business models where developers
can publish their applications as free open source software while
making money and building a community around it.

John Brohan

will make a short presentation about maintaining a paid and free version of an app using the same code base.

There are several approaches to this requirement. This is a simple approach requiring a little editing of the Manifest.xml

and setting a boolean somewhere in the java code.

It is hoped that others, more skilled in java, will present their (no doubt superior) solutions in the following sessions. 

The meeting will be on Thursday at ETS Auditorium. 

Please bring your tablet if you got one at Christmas.

Hi everyone - Bonjour!

Yesterday I had a great time at the meeting. I was a bit disappointed
to see only around ~12 people but it made for a more intimate setup.

Par contre :

 - je vais ajouter très bientôt un bouton permettant de facilement faire une donation via Paypal (https://www.x.com/community/ppx/sdks).

 - je vais très certainement ajouter Analytics ou Flurry pour en savoir plus sur mes utilisateurs (et sur le marché d'Android à Montréal en général).

 - j'envisage d'ajouter de la pub mais je ne suis pas encore sur de la stratégie à ce niveau là (désactivable dans les paramètres de l'application ? version payantes sans pub ? à quel prix ? ...)

Attention, une fois que tu configures ton application comme
"gratuite", tu ne peux plus la remettre payante.

Le marché Android est beaucoup plus orienté vers des applications
gratuites avec pub, plutôt que payante. Et ça a du sens puisque la
plateforme est développé par Google, qui a pour plan d'affaire
d'offrir des services gratuits avec de la pub. :)

Personnellement, je préférerais payer plutôt que d'avoir de la pub.
Mais j'ai déjà lu sur le net un rapport de développeurs (Angry Bird?)
qui dit qu'il faudrait qu'ils chargent 30$ pour compenser ce que la
pub leur donne...

C'est bien le problème que j'ai avec les versions payantes pour enlever la pub ... combien la vendre pour rembourser le manque à gagner de plusieurs années d'utilisation de la version avec pub ?

In your app there is a lot of interaction with a database under your control. It would seem to me that you could have some advertising on the app normally, and a button to a paypal screen to accept a payment from  this phone number to stop the advertising for say 1 year. In this way you have a continuous stream of income. 

I have a similar situation with alz-locate where th app is free and after a trial period the user can "renew" it for 2 years for $20. Mind you nobody has actually paid me $20 so I cannot say that it works.
