Hi!

I love my new chromebook!
And I love running android apps on it! (and Linux too :) )
Any chance that midi support will be implemeted in android runtime so that I can also plug and play with my midi on keyboard ? (I purchased  Caustic, it's great)

cheers!

Hello Ryan,

Thanks for the question. I am also excited about Android on ChromeBook.

We are working on support for USB MIDI on Android on Chrome. But I cannot predict when it will ship.

Thanks,
Phil

Hi!

Good to know! No emergency, I'll just keep making music on windows until then.
Cheers!

Really looking forward to this. Any updates? I know it works in the browser but opening it up to Android apps pretty much eliminates my need to go back and forth between machines most days...

Chrome os 65 release note gave me some hope but I gave it a try and it's still not working.

Same here. I thought the changelog meant that android apps on chrome os can now use the midi api, but at least for USB-MIDI it still doesn't work.

In fact some apps do work with USB MIDI, but others don't. For example, DRC synth works, but Caustic does not.

Definitely not working with DJay2 yet. Any updates?

Caustic is using an old, Android 3.1 based USB MIDI driver, while DRC probably uses an Android M (6.x) MIDI API based driver.
So that might explain why DRC is working and Caustic is not.

It would be interesting to know if G-Stomper Studio or the free G-Stomper Rhythm is working.
G-Stomper apps use an Android M (6.x) MIDI API based driver as default + an Android 4.1 based USB MIDI driver as fallback.

Can someone with a Chromebook give one of the G-Stomper apps a check?
That would be really helpful for us.

Thanks in advance

G-Stomper is not working. DRC works out of the box.
Also tested fruity quiet recently it was not working.

Thanks a lot, Ryan.
Problem found... it was just a misplaced feature check for "android.hardware.usb.host", which is clearly not available on chrome os.
It's compiling in this moment. I mail you a link to a pre-release of G-Stomper Rhythm once it's ready (just to be 100% sure).

The MIDI hotfix for Chrome devices went live yesterday.
It would be great if you could give any of the G-Stomper apps a quick check.
Thanks in advance

I haven't tested those apps. But I have tested FL Mobile by Image Line. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Here are my specs

Chrome OS Version 71.0.3578.94 (Official Build) (64-bit)
ASUS Flip 302-C

Fl Mobile 3.2.06

Akai MPK II - Using a USB HUB and also Tried direct connection.

Hello David,

Android MIDI should work on all ChromeBooks that have ARC++ (Android Running on Chrome) AND have Android N or later.

What version of Android is that running?

FL Mobile may be trying to go directly to the USB drivers, which may not work on ARC++.

You might want to try the official Android MIDI Test apps from the Play Store. They are pretty easy to use.

Hello Phil,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've also asked the developers of FL Mobile (Image-Line) to look into this.
My Asus 302 Flip is running ARC 5167872
Its the latest update sent to chromebooks.

I've downloaded the apps suggested and will report back.
