Differences between Android kernels?

What are the differences between kernel versions of Android? What are
all added to kernels from version 2.6 to 3.8.

The latest Android 4.4 uses kernel version 3.8. The reference content
on modifications to the kernel seems difficult to find for Android.

You will not find one line answers.
2. If you're asking this question you'll probably live well with both.
